According to the Department of Immigration and Multicultural Affairs (DIMA), over
58,000 workers came to Australia on temporary or permanent visas during the past
year.

Over 7700 workers made Western Australia their new home, approximately 8200 went to
Queensland, almost 12,000 went to Victoria, while over 23,000 newcomers chose New
South Wales.

The skills of newcomers are needed to help offset Australia\'s growing skilled labour
shortage.
